Why is Having a mentor so important? What Characteristics should we be looking for? How do we transition from a mentee to a mentor? How do we become an effective Mentor and friend, beyond just the YM work?
A movement must know its history as it plans for the future. Allah has created us in successive generations, where each generation has the opportunity to learn from the successes and the mistakes of its previous generation. Allah dedicated much of the Quran to teaching the Ummah of Muhammad PBUH of the previous Muslim ummah, and previous prophets, and their nations and tribes. Furthermore, the 1400 years of Islamic history after the Prophet Muhammad PBUH illustrates a series of challenges confronting the ummah, and how our righteous predecessors contended with those challenges using Allah's guidance. YM is a fairly new organization, even though none of its current members or leaders were born when the organization was founded. It is imperative that we learn about the Young Muslim experience before YM existed. Who were some of these Young Muslims that took Islam to the streets with the Quran as their guides, and Muhammad PBUH as their leader? We're honored to have two such brothers with us at this year's YMLC. Imam Khalid Griggs came from the Jim Crow South, and his yearning for justice led him to Islam to embrace Islam as a young college student in Washington, D.C. in 1972. For the last half century, he has dedicated his life to furthering the message of Islam and generations of YM leadership have sought his advice and guidance. Imam Raqeeb Abdul Jabbar is a child of Brooklyn's State Street Mosque, where he was mentored by the legendary Shaikh Daud Faisal. He has spend over 4 decades as an Imam and counselor across the U.S. in Masajid, prisons, and hospitals. The Islamic Movement literature which many YM members still look to for direction on how to implement Islam in our society was the very same literature that shaped the minds of these brothers during their youth. And they took those principles to the streets to deliver the message of Islam to a downtrodden people. This is the Prequel to Young Muslims.
As a leader what do we post? Social Media is growing in prominence, and it is particulary important to the Youth demographic. How do we ensure proper use of our Social Media - Humility in islamic work
Muslims don't think of Islam as a complete system of life, we don't think of Islam and Allah's rules as solutions to our problems. Muslims either only focus on Islamic knowledge or worldly knowledge and this gap is evident by the current affairs of the world. Inferiority Complex: Muslims don't think they can attain the best of both worlds. Discuss the path moving forward while balancing our Islamic knowledge while also carrying our "secular" knowledge. What is the journey ahead and how to go about establishing a mindset for this purpose?
The road to Allah is not easy which should make us question how we will continue and strive towards Him? We seek Allah's help when it comes to His worship (everything we do). How can we build self-discipline as Muslims? What are the intrinsic and extrinsic levels of motivation we should cultivate? Discipline is a byproduct of strong intrinsic motivation. How can we align living the best life possible but aiming to do it with please Allah (swt)?
For example; Deprivation of Knowledge, Deprivation from acts of worship, doors of opportunities closed (opposite is true; Quran 65:4), deprives a person of peace of mind (problems after problems), hardens the heart, deprives us of the rahma of Allah, etc.
Discuss how we can hold ourselves accountable before Allah, fear Him, rely on Him, etc. Lastly talk about the door of Tawbah and how we can and should turn back to Allah
How do we balance YM responsibilities with other organizations that we may join (MSA, MIST, Masjid work, ICNA). Is it one or the other? Can we have it all? Giving everything its haq. Having proper intentions for roles that may fill and not to just look cool or be that guy.
